Improving students’ English speaking skill through English board games at the year 8 of SMP al Amin, Surabaya
The importance of learning English speaking has a big role in the mastery of a language. That is why many teachers have used various strategy and media in the learning process. This study uses English Board Games as a media to improve students’ English speaking skill at year 8 of SMP Al Amin Surabaya. The researcher feels interested in knowing how applies this learning media and what problems the researcher faces during the learning process.rnThis study is a classroom action research which consists of two cycles, each of which consists of two meetings. The second cycle is done by doing some improvement on the questions and game equipment. Each cycle consists of three stages: pre-activity, main activity, and post-activity. The subject of the study is the eight grade students. The results show that the teacher uses English Board Games to improve students’ English speaking skill.rn The data is collected using an interview guidance observation checklist then analyzed descriptively. Based on the research findings, it is found that board games effectively improves the students' speaking skill in English class. All students participate actively (reached the criteria of success). Moreover, the majority of the students give positive response towards the implementation of board games, in this case 71.4% of the students show that they are interested in the implementation of English board games. Generally, all of them are so attracted to this game and thus, participate more in English classes. It helps students to get more involved and makes the class less monotonous and more interesting. It is suggested that the teacher uses the board games in teaching and learning process since it can improve the students' speaking skill. It also suggests that other researchers can conduct further research that apply other board games.rnGenerally, the learning process is begun after the teacher and the students lead to pray, after opening the class, he conducts his students by having warming up or simple dialogue between them. Before the teacher starts the game, he groups his students and explains the role of the game or the activities that they are going to do. This process of gaming is monitored by the teacher. As reinforcement, he gives certain activities to his students, such as doing dialogue and challenging groups.rn
