The invesigation of students’ motivation to speak english : a rnCase study given to the sixth semester of english education rnDepartment Students at State Institute for Islamic Studies, Sunan rnAmpel Surabaya year 2013
The purpose of this study is to investigate the types of motivation of the rnsixth semester English Education and Teacher Training Department students rntoward speaking English and also to investigate their motivation level in speaking English. The subjects were 63 English Education and Teacher Training rnDepartment students of State Institute for Islamic Studies Sunan Ampel Surabaya of the academic year 2012/2013. The instruments used for data collection were a questionnaire and an in-depth interview. The data was presented in the form of percentages and describe of questionnaire respondent by using formula F/N x 100. rnThe data collected by using interview and questionnaire were analyzed rndescriptively since the research design is descriptive qualitative. Adverbial rnfrequencies was used to define the English students’ motivation level in speaking English, such as always and often were categorized as high motivation while sometimes and never were categorized as low motivation. rnThe result of the study shows that the students’ motivation orientation is rnmore integrative reasons in learning English language including they want to learn the culture and various English speaking people. The highest means score is 71.58% However, regarding the instrumental reasons, the result showed the evidence that learning English is for traveling to English speaking people is the least impact in students’ English language motivation by the total of the mean score is 67.01%. Meanwhile, the English Students are less motivated in speaking English. The highest mean score from the whole data is 47.13% in this case sometimes is the dominant answer which was chosen by the students. By knowing the motivation types and level of English students hopefully the lecturers and regulation designers to make improvements on the current English program their respective schools are implementing specifically to improve the quality of the students’ speaking skill. And also the department be stricter and more concern on how to make the English students practice their speaking English at campus
