Cuisenaire rods as media to improve students' speaking skill in retelling story : an Experimental study at SMA Bina Bangsa Surabaya
The thesis concerns about a media named Cuisenaire rods to improve rnstudy, the English teacher stated that the lowest ability in English, especially in om students in XI IPA class of SMA Bina Bangsa Surabaya. Most of them got under score 75 in their performance score of English.rnstatement of problem is asked about whether there is a significant improvement of speaking ability in retelling story after using Cuisenaire Rods. So, the aim of the study is to know whether speaking ability in retelling story after using Cuisenaire Rods. This research is expected to be usefull for both teacher and students in language classroom especially rnin Speaking. rnThe type of research used in this study was quantitative research in pre--test and post-aimed to determine cause and effect of two variables. The use of Cuisenaire Rods was the independent variable. The population was the students of SMA Bina Bangsa Surabaya in 2012-2013 academic years and the sample was students of eleventh grade from Science class with 14 students. In choosing the sample, the researcher was suggested lesson. So the researcher took only eleventh graders of the school. Paired test is used by the researcher as instrument to collect the data. In analyzing the data from paired test, the writer firstly calculated the total and mean from overall pre-test and post test score. Then the writer used statistical calculation of t-test. The t-test formula used was t-test with paired double sample because the sample was paired double sample. rnThe result of this study shows that Cuisenaire rods media can improve rnthe statistical calculation of t-test result that t-value (5.03) was bigger than t-table at 0.05 (2.16)) level of significance of t-test. (Where 5.03 is than 2.16). It means that that alternative hypothesis (H ) of this research was accepted. Thus, there was a significant difference between the improvement of students speaking skill before and after retelling story by using Cuisenaire Rods. The result of this research also viii as the heoretical framework of this research. The result of this research was also can consuming. To overcome this problem, the teacher should be creative to limit the time and give each group time duration of story presentation so that students can simplify the story. rn
