The influence of students’ different sex and school background in reading comprehension skill of narrative text at the 2 grade of junior high school at Darul Muta’allimin Taman, Sidoarjo
In the early age, there is discrimination which puts female at a disadvantage in every development aspect including in obtaining education. Therefore, it makes female lack and leave behind in every development aspect, specifically in education. rnHowever, in this recent age, there is no longer difference in process of giving education whether for male or female which means there is nothing impedes them to get the same good achievement in education. As learners, either male or female who need to gain knowledge, male-female students are demanded to have ability in comprehending English reading text because there are kinds of information written in English. However, the result of recent research, reports and studies indicate that male have fallen behind female in academic achievement, particularly in the areas of literacy. Males typically earn lower grades than females do in academic achievement, particularly in the areas of literacy. Although there are no any longer differences in rngiving education either for male or female students, it seems that there is still gap in education achievement. It shows that the factor of sex differences cannot be ignored in students’ achievement in learning process. Furthermore, which cannot put aside in students’ achievement in learning process is the role of school. There are private and public schools which have their own characteristics to deliver the materials to the students. rnThe researcher uses a quantitative research, specifically, comparative analysis method. the sample of this research are 10 male students with private school background, 10 female students with private school background, 10 male students with public school background, and 10 female students with public school background. The researcher gives 2 test of narrative texts which are about fairy tale and fable. In the first test (test 1), there are 25 multiple choices questions and 25 True/False questions, and the second test (test 2) consists of 10 essay questions. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses Two-Way ANOVA to verify the hypothesis. rnThe results show that there are significant differences in students’ rncomprehension skill in understanding narrative text based on their sex. It happens because F statistic which is 9.4 is more than F table either for 5% (9.4 > 4.11) or 1% (9.4 > 7.39). It shows that the students’ different sex influences the students’ comprehension skill in understanding narrative text. On the contrary, there are no significant differences in students’ comprehension skill in understanding narrative text based on their school background. It happens because F statistic which is 1.57 is less than F table either for 5% (1.57 < 4.11) or 1% (1.57 < 7.39). It shows that the students’ school background does not influence the students’ comprehension skill in rnunderstanding narrative text. Furthermore, there are no significant differences attributable to the particular combinations of sex and school background in the students’ comprehension skill in understanding narrative text. It happens because F statistic which is 0.2 is less than F table either for 5% (0.2 < 4.11) or 1% (0.2 < 7.39). rnIt shows that the students’ school background does not influence differently either for male or female students’ reading comprehension skill of narrative text.
