The pedagogical competence of student teachers at English education Department of State Institute for Islamic Studies Sunan Ampel Surabaya
There are some competences that the teacher must master. However, the most rncrucial competence is the pedagogical competence. In this study, pedagogical rncompetence is about the ability in lesson planning and the ability in conducting the teaching.There are three aims in this study, they are : to know how the pedagogical competence of student teachers at English Education Department of SIIS Sunan Ampel Surabaya is, to know what the weaknesses of the pedagogical competence are, and to know what the causes of the weaknesses of the pedagogical competence at English Education Department of SIIS Sunan Ampel Surabaya are. rnIn this study, the writer uses the PPL class of A and B to be the sample of this study. In addition, the writer uses descriptive qualitative approach. Means that, the writer observes the student teachers as well as examine the documents collected and then describe the result of the study. Furthermore, to achieve those aims, the writer takes three techniques of collection data, such as observation, documentation and interview. rnAs a result of the study, the findings shows that the pedagogical competence of student teachers at English Education Department is good. Even that, there are also weaknesses whether in lesson planning and conducting teaching. In lesson planning, the weaknesses are in formulating the goal and objectives; organizing the teaching material; deciding the aids; and planning the assessment instrument. While in conducting the teaching, the weaknesses are in opening the class; mastering the learning material; organizing the teaching and learning; organizing the class and timing; conducting the assessment; building a good rapport; and closing the classroom. The causes are the student teachers admitted that it is because they do not rnknow about what thing that they must attach on the lesson plan as well as the rnunclearneis also because the human error done by themselves. While in conducting the teaching, the causes of weak category is four things. The first is that the student teachers do not know what they must do in rnopening the classroom; the second is that they are less preparation; the third is unconfidence; and the last, the higher one, is difficult in managing the time. rnpedagogical competence is good and basically they know the way in creating the lesson plan and conducting the teaching, but they are lack in practice. Therefore, the writer suggests the student teachers to have more practice to increase the quality of their teaching.
