Ideally, Islam should be understood by its followers in an open and inclusive manner especially when we consider that Islam's followers have various cultures. However, in contrast to that, Islam in fact is often seen and understood in a manner that is very narrow, often artikelual, partial, rigid and stiff. Contestation of ideas in understanding values in Islam especially related to controversial areas such as gender or women's issues have never ended so far. In this conartikel, Aminah Wadud is a woman who is grown up in a tradition very differs to many other Muslim women tradition [read: patriarkhis]. Amina Wadud's backgroud and the surrounding tradition and environment has develop her criticism in understanding Islam. She actually is shocked and irritated to know that gender injustice within Muslim community is more or less aroused and based on interpretation on Islamic teaching. This is further worsened by hat fact that many Muslims see the obedience and following to those ulama...ifa.
