This articles discusses the issue of leaving home for women from the perspective of traditionalist muslims in Indonesia. The focus is those female students who continue their education in pesantren [Islamic traditional boarding school]. There still lives an opinion that leaving house for women to pursue education in pesantren or elsewhere else is still controversial and problematic. The mainstream opinion is that education for females is the responbility of the husband or the parent as it is stated in Uqud al Lujjain fi Bayani Huquq az Zaujain, a much referred book among the traditional muslim community on rights and responsibilities of husband and wife. Moreover, all parts of female are considered aurat [privy parts] with the exception of the hand palm and face which only mabram [close relatives] may see it. This very male biased point of view is only example of the male biased beliefs that also reflects the whole system and the way of living of the santri which is very much...ifa.
