In this article, the author presents the results of the research on the use of religious symbols during the election of the governor of Lampung held in 2008. It focuses on three main questions: 1)forms of religious symbols used by candidates for governatorial office during their campaigns; 2)motifs of such a use of religious symbols; and 3)public perceptions on the use of religious symbols by governatorial candidates. One of the important findings is that the use of religious symbols during the electoral campaign did not much affect the result of the elecyion; thus indicating that religious symbols gave no significant benefits for mobilizing voters and winning the vote.ifa.
