Religion continues to become a political resource in Indonesian politics. This has become more noticiable during the process of local elections. This article presents the results of the study on the use religious symbols during the election of the major [walikota] of the City of Jambi, Province of Jambi, held in 2008. The study focuses on two questions: 1)what are types of religious symbols used by pairs of candidates during the campain process? 2)what are social impacts resulted from the use of religious symbols during the election of the city head? The types of the use of religious symbols examined in this study include silaturrahmi [establishment of social relations], sedekah jariyah [religious charity], religious attributes [clothing, head cover], and verbal languages. The study concludes that use of religios symbols in the electoral campaign did not raise conflict within the society, but it had a negative effect on the political education of the people, and even...ifa.
