In Indonesia religion plays an important role in electoral proceses both at the national and local levels. Focusing on the case of gubernatorial election in the province of North Sumatera, Indonesia, held in April 2008, this article examines the use of religious issues by gubernatorial candidates during their electoral campaigns. The author classifies types of the use of religious issues into five: the characteristics of candidates, religious-related vision and mission of the candidates, manipulation of religious doctrines, approaches to religious leaders andinstitutions, and religious-nuanced events. One of the important features of the gubernatorial election in North Sumatera is that the election ran in a peaceful manner and was relatively free of political violence. The author suggests that the configuration of the pairs of gubernatorial candidates, nominated by taking the composition of various ethnic and religious groups in North Sumatera society into consideration...ifa.
