Abbasiya period was the golden period in Islamic Civilization; many things can be learned from the period. One of them is the academic climate. The mixing of Greek, Persian, and Islamic main streams led the period into the Islamic golden age. The translations of Greek and Persian books that been done since Umayya period were continued in this period. The society loved knowledge very much. The goverment also supported much the development of sciences. It can be proved by the existence of observatories and Bayt al Hikmah sponsored by the caliph. Bayt al Hikmah was a library. Its existence had given aspiration for the development of sciences. Bayt al Hikmah had been a place of seeking knowledge, discussing, studying, and the center of book translation. This writing tries to analyze the tradition developing in this period, especially the existence of Bayt al Hikmah. It is hoped to be able to inspire us to bring back the glory of Islamic sciences, especially in Indonesia.ifa.
