The role of pesantren [Islamic boarding school] in the dissemination of civic cultures in Indoensia has been highlighted many scholars. Howerver, the role of kyai and his santri (aprentice) in the issues of economic empowering and poverty alleviantion has so far been neglected. Through case study in pandeglang,this paper argues that one of the existing aims of pesantren is community development. In doing this, pesantren does not only equip ist santri with religious discipline but also economic capacity by which the santri are capable to overcome economic diasadvantages of their society upon study completion. But, this will give no impact if the government does not facilititae with supervision and reform regulation.ifa.
