Islamic microfinance institutions or locally called Baitul Maal wat Tamwil [BMT] conveys alternative concepts for social and business mission. The social mission of BMT is collecting and rising fund consisting of zakat, infaq, shodaqoh from the public by ways of interest free transactions. This fund as used for productive investments. BMT is a kind of microfinance institutions which aims at supporting and financing the small and medium enterprises [SMEs]. This article argues that BMTs have some advantages compared to other micro finance institutions in reaching people who are urbankable. BMTs have also a significant role in educating the poor on how to manage their own portofolio. It has also a role in the creationof social cohetion among people.ifa.
