Kiai dan kekuasaan sosial dalam masyarakat Madura :
For the Madurese, kiai is a degree of community given to someone who has extensive knowledge of Islamic religion. On the island, however, it is somewhat difficult to determine whether someone is a kiai or not, because the title more lies on social recognition. Only those who run an Islamic boarding school can be easily recognized as kiai. Furthermore, kiai is very close to politics. This is inevitable because kiai has large masses and it easy to mobilize the masses for political purposes. Kiai have stronger political roles than other classification of society. Thus, there are two strengths at the same time of being kiai; religious knowledge and charisma, by which they have political capital. Finally, how is the role of kiai in religious and social live of Madurese society, and how is their role in politics are the questions that will be answered descriptive-analytically in this article.ifa.
