Before appointed as Prophet, Muhammad was well known as a truthful trader. There is no record in history when he precisely terminated this activity. However it is clear that he was not a trader anymore after his first marriage, which is to Khadijah, and it means that there was no trading activity afterward. But his companions recorded many of this sayings and practices as this teachings in trade and business. This article traces the root of the effort of some contemporary Muslim exponents to perform the Islamic athics of bussiness, based on the prophetic teachings, in many modern transactions in Indonesia. The conclusion is that the lack of ethical basis in Muslim societies generally makes certain difficulties to practice Islamic ethics in business consistently.ifa.
