The idea of pluralism has been being a controversial discourse among Indonesian Muslims since the last decade of twentieth century. The problem is wether Islam as religion has the same fundamental norms and values as other religions, which form a common plat form a common platform among them. Some Muslim thinkers approve the idea of the common platform, while some others refuse. Nurcholish Madjid is a leading Muslim thinkers-among others-in Indonesia who insisted the urgency and relevance of the idea of pluralism for Indonesia as a nationwith the plural ethnic, religion, and culture. This article would analyze the background, methodology, basic arguments and principles of the idea of pluralism of Nurcholish Madjid, as well as its implementation in contemporary Indonesia.yo.
