Pondok pesantren has a specific tradition that is for different with other institution's. It has sub culture relating with way of life, system of values, system of power, and authority in its administration. As the oldest education in Indonesia, it has at least five pillars, namelly: kyai, santri, mosque, boarding house and kitab kuning. The modernization has changed the sub culture and pillars. The models of modern education changed the sub culture. The influence of kyai has been changed by the interference of gomernment with national curriculum in pondok pesantren. The paternalistic relation of kyai become more democratic, because kyai makes less relation with santris, and the followship of to kyai become more sational for santri get some new knowledge beside the knowledge of religion.
