Pondok pesanten has a specific tradition that is for defferent with other institution. It has sub culture relating with way of life, system of values, system of power, and authority in its administration. As the oldest education in Indonesia, it has at least five pillars, namely: kya, santri, mosque, boarding house and kitab kuning. The modernizaton has changed the sub culture and pillars. The models of modern education changed the sub culture. The influence of kyai has been changed by the interference of government with national curriculum in pondok pesantren. The paternalistic relation of kyai become more democratic, because kyai makes less relation with santris and the followship of santri to kyai become more rational for santri get some new knowlegde beside the knowledge of religion.
